One day training on Introduction to Writing Better Research Proposals hosted by ISTRC and ISRC at CTCRI, Kerala, India

ISTRC/ISRC Organised a one-Training on "Introduction to Writing Better Research Proposals for Early Career Root and Tuber Crops Scientists" at the Central Tuber Crops Research Institute (CTCRI), Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India, Tuesday 20th May 2014. This training was facilitated by Dr Rama Nathan, President, Indian Society for Root Crops (ISRC) /CTCRI; Prof Keith Tomlins, President, International Society of Root and Tuber Crops (ISTRC) /Natural Resources Institute, University of Greenwich (UoG-NRI), UK; Prof Lateef Sanni, Secretary/Treasurer, ISTRC & ISTRC Africa-Branch President /Federal University of Agriculture (FUNAAB), Nigeria; Francis Alacho, African Innovations Institute (AFRII), Uganda; and Dr J T Sheriff, CTCRI.
Participants (30) mostly from CTCRI, Kerala University and College of Agriculture indicated the need for boosting their skills in writing research proposals, research methods, intellectual property rights and ethics in the pre-training questionnaire and gave good reviews in the post training evaluation. They found the Master Class by Dr J T Sheriff, CTCRI, India to be very helpful.

The beneficiaries mentioned that they were keen to apply the things they had learned from the training and showed their appreciation to the organisers, facilitators and the ISTRC. ISTRC supported the training by providing the cost for the banner, pen-drives and certificates to the participants while the ISRC paid for the food provided during the lunch and tea/coffee breaks. This is an effective use of resources to promote the ISTRC and benefit early career root and tuber scientists. ISTRC plans to organise a similar of training in Vietnam in June, 2014.
Prof Keith Tomlins, thanked Dr. G. Padmaja (acting on behalf of Dr Chakrabarti, Director CTCRI and ISTRC Councillor for South Asia) for kindly supporting the training day, Dr Rama Nathan, for organising the meeting, Prof Lateef Sanni for running the module on Research Methods, Francis Alacho, for running the Module on Research Proposal Writing, Dr J T Sheriff, for giving the very interesting Master Class and lastly but never least, the young career scientists for participating in the event.
